Newcomers to Canada Find Training and Jobs in Eastern Ontario

Moving to a new country or region can be overwhelming. It requires a lot of time, energy, and money to prepare, move, and settle in. If you’re a newcomer to Canada, moving to eastern Ontario you will receive access to training, resources, assistance organizations, and a community that welcomes them with open arms. Read on to learn about how Ontario East and the employers of the region are ready to help you settle into your new home. 

Services for Newcomers to Canada

While there are many programs and organizations helping newcomers to Canada, it takes a lot of time to research and find them. We’ve compiled a list of a few of these organizations so you don’t have to. 

Express Entry: the Government of Canada uses the Express Entry program to manage immigration applications from skilled workers. Through this online system, newcomers to Canada get a straightforward way to enter and stay in the country.

Local Immigration Partnerships: Ease your transition by connecting with a Local Immigration Partnership (LIP). Since April 2020, LIPs have worked in eastern Ontario to improve the newcomer experience and address service gaps. LIPs provide welcome kits to help you familiarize yourself with your new neighbourhood; organize ambassador groups to provide a voice for newcomers; map services for newcomers and develop a referral process so you know where and how to get started. 

NEWS: The Newcomer Employment Welcome Services centre (NEWS) in Cornwall, Ontario provides immigration support in the form of: employing newcomers, helping newcomers get settled, and understanding their needs in the community.

OINP: The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) helps newcomers to Canada get fast-tracked permanent residency. If you’re a skilled worker, business person, or graduate student, connect with OINP now.  

Employers in eastern Ontario are actively looking to connect with young newcomers to Canada to provide jobs for international students. Learn more about the ways businesses are connecting with students: 

New call-to-actionYMCA: The YMCA employment program can help you get settled in the region if you’ve already been approved by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). They offer services in English and French and because the YMCA has multilingual staff, you may be able to get services in your first language. The YMCA employment program can help you with application processes; provide referrals to services and resources; provide access to settlement workers and information on education, employment, and training; and provide referrals to language assessment and classes. 

New Canadian Centre: One of the great immigration resources in Peterborough and Northumberland (Cobourg) is the New Canadian Centre, which provides immigrants and refugees with access to language classes, job search assistance, and events to help newcomers connect with their new communities. 

Power of Trades: Newcomers can find jobs with newcomer employment services like the Power of Trades program. As participants, newcomers get access to six weeks of free non-technical, pre-employment training.
